Case Studies & Site Visits: How to understand a space more

Hola Guys!!!

It’s been a while since I have written something for you people. So today I am writing this article on some personal realization that I had during my visit in January to a site regarding journalism. I went to that site thinking I will cover the building and interiors of that place to put it in my article. But then, when I saw the vibe of that place, I suddenly felt the need of talking. I wanted to talk to the owner and the designers of that site. Basically, anyone involved with that building. How to understand a space through Case Studies & Site Visits

And guess what! It was the greatest experience I have had till date when I visited a place as a designer or journalist or maybe a visitor to that place. I could feel and understand that place more. While my way back from that place I thought that this is what we people lack while we do some case study or site visit and I thought to write this piece for budding architects and designers like you.

Whenever we go to a site, we are taught to measure it, do its SWOT analysis, criticize it and appreciate it. Only a fraction of people tell us that experience the site but we are confined to experience it as other designers at that point. This article is about experiencing space more.

THE MORE WE EXPERIENCE A SPACE, THE MORE WE UNDERSTAND IT…

So how to experience a space more? Let me give you some tips for that….

  1. Experience that place as a designer: this is something that we always do when we go to space. It is a natural instinct after some time.
  2. Feel the vibe of that space: try to feel the personal experience of that space. Its vibes, does it calm you down, does it give energy, or if it makes you creative. Just like a song gives you some feel and experience. What is that personal touch of that space for you? Feel that.
  3. See that place as a visitor and a user: Look at the place as you are the client or visitor. Look at it as what if you were supposed to work here. How do these spaces make you feel? This way you get to know how it makes the users of that space feel after it is been designed.

These 3 points tell you how to experience a building on your end. But we need not limit our experience to ourselves. You should want more of that experience. So the next step is to communicate. But who to communicate with? To these….

  1. With the Owner: When you communicate with the owner. You get to know what he wanted and what he got as the final result in that space. His point of views definitely matters as he was the client to the designer.
  2. With the designers and artists involved: When you communicate with the architect, interior designer, graffiti makers, etc. who created that space, you learn about the space initially and concepts, the problems faced and how they overcame it. How this project became a success or why it is a failure. Moreover, you get their experience on your plate to some extent which will be helpful to you in the future maybe.
  3. You can also communicate with the workers and the visitors for getting more insights.

To conclude, I would like to say when you go to space just don’t limit yourself to some basic things. Explore more and more about it because everyone has got to say something about that place right? Trust me you are going to love that experience. You don’t know if you find some good connections or friends over there like I did. Share something that you would like to add to this article. I will be writing another piece of architecture for you people soon. Till then click the details and experience the space!!!
